How TimerNook keeps time
When you press Start, the timer notes the exact moment it should end and, on every update, compares that with your device clock. Browsers slow down background tabs, which makes timers that count ticks drift; reading the clock avoids that. The alarm sound is made in your browser with the Web Audio API. Browsers can also pause background tabs completely to save power, so while a timer runs the page plays a tone too quiet to hear, which keeps the tab awake; your browser may show a speaker icon on the tab. If a page was paused anyway (for example when a phone locks), the alarm rings the moment you come back.
What you can do with it
- Any length: from 1 second up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds.
- See it from across the room: Full screen shows the ring, the numbers and the main buttons, and hides the settings.
- Choose the alarm: Chime, Beep, Bell, Soft, Rise, or None for a silent, visual-only alarm. The alarm repeats for up to a minute until you stop it.
- Add time: +1 min works while the timer runs, and the alarm moves with it.
- Share it: Copy link gives an address with your time in it, such as
timernook.com/?t=7m30s. - Nothing to sign up for: no account and no cookies. Your sound, volume and notification choices are saved only in your browser.
Questions and answers
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. TimerNook works out the time left from your device clock and a fixed end time, not by counting ticks, so a background tab is still right. While a timer runs, the page also plays a tone too quiet to hear, so the browser keeps the tab awake; your browser may show a speaker icon on the tab. If you also tick "Notify me", you get a system notification at the end.
Will the alarm ring if my phone screen locks?
Not always. Phone browsers can pause web pages when the screen locks, and an iPhone on silent can mute browser sound. Keep the screen on; while the timer runs TimerNook asks the browser to keep the screen awake where that is supported. If the page was paused, the alarm rings as soon as you return.
Is TimerNook free?
Yes. Every timer on the site is free to use, with no account.
Can I use a timer without sound?
Yes. Choose "None (visual only)" in the sound list. When time is up, the numbers flash red and a "Time is up" box appears.
